  • Digital use creates responsibilities. Convenience does not remove responsibility: users must protect their own data and respect the rights of others. This includes using unique passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, updating software, installing security updates, locking devices and keeping reliable backups.

  • Personal information must be protected carefully. Passwords, OTPs, PINs, security answers and confidential personal information should never be disclosed to unknown persons or suspicious websites. Users should set social media accounts carefully, limit location sharing, review app permissions and avoid posts that could endanger safety or reputation.

  • Phishing and malware require cautious behaviour. Before clicking links or downloading files, users should check website addresses, sender details, spelling, urgency and attachments. HTTPS is a useful security indicator, but HTTPS alone does not prove that a website is trustworthy. Malware may include viruses, worms, trojans, spyware and ransomware.

  • Cybercrime causes harm to individuals and institutions. It may involve unauthorised access, data theft, identity theft, online fraud, malware distribution, cyberstalking, cyberbullying and denial-of-service attacks. Evidence of online abuse or fraud should be preserved, including messages, URLs, dates and screenshots, and the matter should be reported to a trusted adult, platform, organisation or appropriate cybercrime authority.

  • Technical possibility is not ethical justification. An action may be technically possible but still unacceptable if it violates consent, privacy, fairness or safety. A useful ethical test asks whether the action is legal, fair, necessary, respectful of privacy, safe for others and explainable to the people affected.

  • Privacy depends on responsible data management. Personal information should be collected and used only for a clear, legitimate purpose. Privacy protection involves informed consent, limited collection, secure storage, limited access, a clear purpose and safe deletion when information is no longer needed. Data minimisation reduces unnecessary exposure.

  • Intellectual property and academic honesty must be respected. Copyright generally protects original expression, not merely an idea. Permission, a suitable licence or a legally applicable exception may be required before reuse. Users should credit sources, avoid plagiarism and follow licence conditions for images, music, text, videos, datasets and software. Creators deserve recognition and control over their work.

  • Software use is governed by licences. Software licences specify how software may be installed, used, copied, modified or distributed. Open-source software makes source code available under licences that permit specified forms of examination, modification and redistribution; this does not mean that all restrictions are removed.

  • Digital communication requires netiquette. Users should communicate respectfully, verify information before sharing it and avoid encouraging harassment or misinformation. Responsible communication is especially important because digital messages and posts can contribute to a lasting digital footprint.

  • Technology should be inclusive and accountable. Technology decisions should consider benefits, risks, fairness, accountability, transparency, human dignity, safety, environmental impact and the possibility of misuse. Accessibility enables people with different abilities to use digital products and services effectively, while checks for algorithmic bias help identify unfair effects on particular people or groups.

  • Security is a shared responsibility. Users, software developers, organisations, service providers and governments all contribute to cybersecurity. When harmful incidents occur, responsible action includes stopping the harm, preserving evidence, reporting it and learning how to prevent recurrence.

  • Cyber law establishes legal responsibilities. The Information Technology Act was enacted in India in 2000. It gives legal recognition to electronic records and electronic transactions and addresses several computer-related offences. Cyber laws and related rules can change, so current official legal guidance should be checked.
