Percentage change is calculated as:

A price index is generally expressed as:
Price Index = (Cost of the market basket in the current year / Cost of the market basket in the base year) x 100
- Interpretation places statistical results in the context of an economic problem. This supports planning, budgeting, forecasting, policy formulation and evaluation, but statistical results generally express tendencies or probabilities and may not explain every individual situation.
- Governments use statistical information to assess economic conditions, design policies, allocate resources and evaluate development programmes. Statistics therefore contributes to economic policy objectives including growth, price stability, employment and poverty reduction.
- Businesses use statistics to study demand, prices, costs, sales, production and consumer behaviour. Statistical evidence helps firms make decisions under changing market conditions.

- Statistical methods have important limitations. Statistics mainly studies numerical data, generally deals with aggregates rather than isolated cases, and complements rather than replaces economic reasoning, ethical judgement and knowledge of real-world conditions.
