Latitude and longitude form a global coordinate grid for locating places accurately on Earth. Latitude primarily identifies north–south position and climatic patterns, while longitude identifies east–west position and provides the basis for calculating differences in local time.

Who and What

  • Latitude: The angular distance of a place north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees from 0° to 90°. It is used to understand heat zones, climate, seasons, and north–south location.
  • Equator: The great circle at 0° latitude dividing Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. Latitude increases from the Equator to 90° N at the North Pole and 90° S at the South Pole.
  • Parallels of Latitude: Imaginary circles drawn parallel to the Equator that indicate the north–south position of a place. They are unequal in length: the Equator is the longest and the parallels become shorter towards the poles. The distance between successive degrees of latitude is approximately 111 kilometres.
  • Longitude: The angular distance of a place east or west of the Prime Meridian, measured from 0° to 180°. It is used to establish east–west position and calculate local time, standard time, and time zones.
  • Prime Meridian: The reference meridian at 0° longitude passing through Greenwich. Longitude increases eastward to 180° E and westward to 180° W.
  • Meridians of Longitude: Imaginary semicircles joining the North Pole and South Pole. All meridians are equal in length and meet at both poles.
  • Geographical Coordinates: Latitude and longitude used together to identify the exact position of a place. Coordinates are normally written with latitude first and longitude second, as in 28°36′ N, 77°12′ E.
  • Great Circle: A circle on Earth’s surface whose plane passes through the centre of Earth. The Equator and all meridians are great circles.
  • Local Time: Time determined by the position of the Sun at a particular longitude. It changes from one meridian to another.
  • Standard Time: Uniform time adopted for a country or region, based on a selected standard meridian. It reduces confusion caused by multiple local times.
  • Indian Standard Time: India’s standard time, based on 82°30′ E longitude and equal to UTC plus 5 hours 30 minutes.
  • Standard Meridian of India: The meridian at 82°30′ E, passing near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, used as the basis for Indian Standard Time.
  • International Date Line: An approximately 180° longitude line at which the calendar date changes by one day. It deviates from 180° to avoid dividing land areas. Crossing it westward adds one day, while crossing it eastward subtracts one day.
  • Time Zone: A region using the same standard time. Earth is commonly divided into 24 time zones, each covering approximately 15° of longitude.
  • Tropic of Cancer: The parallel at approximately 23°30′ N, marking the northernmost position where the Sun can be directly overhead.
  • Tropic of Capricorn: The parallel at approximately 23°30′ S, marking the southernmost position where the Sun can be directly overhead.
  • Arctic Circle: The parallel at approximately 66°30′ N.
  • Antarctic Circle: The parallel at approximately 66°30′ S.
  • Grid Reference: A method of locating a feature on a map using intersecting lines, coordinates, or designated grid squares.
  • Map interpretation: The process of using a map’s title, scale, direction, legend or conventional signs, grid, and coordinate information to understand locations and measure distances.
  • Angular notation: One degree equals 60 minutes (′), and one minute equals 60 seconds (″).

Causes and Consequences

  • The Equator provides the reference line for latitude at 0°, so places can be identified according to their angular distance north or south of it. This produces the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and allows latitude to be used in explaining heat zones, climate, seasons, and location.

  • The Prime Meridian provides the reference line for longitude at 0°, so places can be identified east or west of Greenwich. Longitude extends to 180° E and 180° W, establishing a global east–west framework.

  • The spherical form of Earth means that parallels of latitude decrease in length towards the poles, whereas all meridians remain equal in length and meet at the North and South Poles. The distance represented by one degree of longitude is therefore greatest at the Equator and becomes zero at the poles.

  • Earth rotates through 360° in approximately 24 hours. Consequently, it rotates through 15° in one hour, and the time difference for one degree of longitude is 4 minutes:

Time difference = Difference in longitude Ă— 4 minutes

  • A place east of another place has a later local time, while a place west has an earlier local time. Longitudes in the same direction are subtracted; longitudes in opposite directions are added.

  • For example, the time difference between 75° E and 90° E is:

15° × 4 minutes = 60 minutes = 1 hour

Therefore, the place at 90° E is one hour ahead of the place at 75° E.

  • Because local time varies continuously from one meridian to another, countries adopt standard time based on a selected standard meridian. This creates a uniform time for a country or region and avoids the administrative confusion that would result from using many local times.

  • India extends approximately from 68°7′ E to 97°25′ E longitude and from 8°4′ N to 37°6′ N latitude on the mainland. Its considerable east–west extent creates a local time difference of nearly two hours, but India uses one standard time based on the 82°30′ E meridian near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh.

  • Indian Standard Time is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. The adoption of a single standard time enables the country to operate according to a common national time despite its longitudinal extent.

  • The International Date Line generally follows 180° longitude. Since crossing it changes the calendar date, westward travel adds one day and eastward travel subtracts one day. Its deviations prevent the line from unnecessarily dividing land areas.

  • The latitude–longitude grid provides a universal system for locating any place on Earth. However, accurate map interpretation also requires the use of coordinates alongside scale, direction, symbols, grid references, and measured distances.
