- Primary memory is directly accessible by the CPU and provides fast working space. RAM stores currently running programs and data, but it is temporary and volatile. ROM is generally non-volatile and stores instructions required for essential startup operations.
- Secondary storage provides larger, long-term capacity for programs and data. Examples include hard disks, solid-state drives, optical discs, and pen drives. Regular backups help protect important data from accidental deletion, hardware failure, malware, or other damage.
- Memory and storage units follow binary measurement: 1 byte = 8 bits; 1 KB = 1024 bytes; 1 MB = 1024 KB; 1 GB = 1024 MB; 1 TB = 1024 GB. Data is commonly represented inside computers using binary digits, 0 and 1.
- Computer performance is influenced by processor speed, the number of CPU cores, cache size, RAM capacity, storage speed, and the efficiency of software. Cache memory improves performance by storing frequently used data and instructions close to the CPU.
- The operating system acts as an intermediary between the user, application programs, and computer hardware. It manages processes, memory, files, devices, security, and user interaction. Booting involves starting the computer and loading the operating system into memory.
- Hardware and software are interdependent parts of a complete computer system. Hardware cannot perform useful tasks without software, and software cannot operate without suitable hardware.
- Computers may be general-purpose systems, designed for many tasks, or special-purpose systems, designed for a specific task. Portable and embedded computing devices are designed for requirements such as mobility, low power consumption, or real-time operation. Embedded systems are found in washing machines, cars, and medical equipment.
- Computers combine speed, accuracy, storage capacity, automation, and the ability to process large amounts of data. However, they follow instructions and do not possess independent human judgment. Incorrect instructions or data can therefore produce incorrect results, and the quality of output depends on accurate input, correct instructions, and reliable hardware and software.
- Responsible computer use includes protecting personal data, using strong passwords, keeping software updated, and respecting privacy and intellectual property. Cloud computing provides computing resources, applications, or storage through a network, usually the internet, rather than relying only on a local computer.
