Renewable resources, including sunlight, wind, and water, can be replenished relatively quickly, whereas non-renewable resources, including coal, petroleum, natural gas, and minerals, are limited and take millions of years to form.
- The greenhouse effect is the warming of Earth’s lower atmosphere caused by gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapour. Global warming refers specifically to the long-term rise in Earth’s average temperature, whereas climate change includes wider long-term changes in temperature, rainfall, winds, and extreme weather.
- Energy use can be assessed using the equation:

Improving energy efficiency reduces resource consumption and environmental damage.
- The ecological footprint measures the amount of biologically productive land and water required to support a person’s or community’s consumption and absorb its waste. A smaller ecological footprint generally indicates less pressure on natural systems.
- Biodiversity conservation maintains ecological balance, supports food and medicine supplies, and increases ecosystem resilience. In-situ conservation protects species in their natural habitats, whereas ex-situ conservation protects them outside their natural habitats through zoos, botanical gardens, seed banks, and gene banks.
- India’s major protected areas include national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, conservation reserves, and community reserves. Conservation of biodiversity may therefore involve protected habitats, species protection, and captive breeding.
- The polluter-pays principle states that those responsible for pollution should bear the cost of preventing and managing the resulting environmental damage. The precautionary principle supports preventive action when an activity may cause serious environmental harm, even if complete scientific certainty is unavailable.
- Afforestation can increase tree cover, while deforestation removes forests for agriculture, construction, mining, roads, and other activities. Controlling deforestation and protecting native trees are important components of conservation.
- Environmental protection requires cooperation among individuals, communities, governments, industries, schools, and international organisations. Environmental awareness becomes effective only when knowledge leads to responsible behaviour, community participation, and enforcement of environmental laws.
- Important environmental observances include World Environment Day on 5 June, Earth Day on 22 April, World Water Day on 22 March, and the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May.
- Important Indian environmental legislation includes the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, now known as the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam, 1980, and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
- The National Green Corps and eco-clubs encourage students to participate in environmental education, cleanliness drives, tree planting, energy conservation, and biodiversity protection.
