Summary

Main Idea

Health is a balanced state of physical, mental and social well-being rather than merely the absence of disease. Personal and community hygiene help prevent infections and create a safe environment, while wellness depends on balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate rest, emotional balance and healthy habits. Health awareness enables individuals to recognise risks, make responsible choices and seek timely medical assistance.

Key Concepts and Definitions

  • Health: A state of physical, mental and social well-being that enables a person to live and function effectively.
  • Hygiene: Practices that maintain cleanliness and prevent the spread of diseases.
  • Personal Hygiene: Cleanliness practices such as bathing, handwashing, oral care, clean clothing and keeping nails short.
  • Community Hygiene: Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in shared places through safe water, waste disposal, clean toilets and pollution control.
  • Wellness: An active and continuous process of improving physical, mental, emotional, social and environmental well-being.
  • Communicable Disease: A disease that can spread from one person to another through air, water, food, insects, direct contact or contaminated objects.
  • Non-communicable Disease: A disease that does not normally spread between people and may be linked to heredity, lifestyle, ageing or environmental factors.
  • Balanced Diet: A diet containing suitable amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water according to the body's needs.
  • Immunity: The body's ability to resist or fight infections.
  • First Aid: Immediate and temporary care given to an injured or ill person until professional medical assistance is available.
  • Mental Health: A state of emotional and psychological well-being in which a person can manage normal stresses, learn, work and maintain relationships.
  • Health Education: The process of gaining knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about personal, community and environmental health.

Supporting Arguments and Evidence

  • Prevention is generally better than cure. Hygienic habits, immunisation, nutritious food, physical exercise and early action can reduce illness and limit complications.

  • Effective personal hygiene includes washing hands with soap and clean water before eating or preparing food, after using the toilet, after coughing or sneezing, and after contact with waste or animals. Effective handwashing involves wetting the hands, applying soap, rubbing all surfaces including between the fingers and under the nails, rinsing and drying; the process should take about 20 seconds.

  • Other important personal practices include brushing teeth twice a day, using safe drinking water, bathing regularly, wearing clean clothes and avoiding the sharing of personal items such as towels, combs and toothbrushes.

  • Safe food practices reduce the risk of food-borne illness. Raw materials should be washed, food should be cooked properly, food should be protected from insects, clean utensils should be used and perishable items should be refrigerated when possible.

  • A healthy lifestyle requires regular physical activity, adequate sleep, a balanced diet, sufficient water, avoidance of tobacco and harmful substances, and effective stress management. Regular physical activity supports healthy body weight, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, flexibility and mental well-being.

  • Good nutrition supports growth, energy, immunity, concentration and recovery. Excessive processed food, salt, sugar and unhealthy fats should therefore be limited.

  • Health is multidimensional. Physical fitness is insufficient without mental, emotional, social and environmental well-being. Mental health enables a person to manage normal stresses, learn, work and maintain relationships.

  • Respiratory infections can be reduced by covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, improving ventilation, avoiding unnecessary close contact and staying home when unwell. Vaccination helps the immune system develop protection against specific infectious diseases and should be taken according to authorised public-health guidance.

  • Individual health and public health are interconnected. Clean surroundings require proper disposal of solid waste, safe drainage, clean toilets, protection of water sources and control of mosquitoes and other disease-carrying organisms. Responsible behaviour therefore protects the wider community as well as the individual.

  • Health risks can be understood through the relationship: Risk = Probability of harm × Severity of harm. This highlights the importance of considering both how likely a harmful event is and how serious its consequences may be.

  • Body Mass Index can be estimated using the equation: BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)². BMI is a screening measure and not a complete diagnosis of health.

  • First-aid priorities are to ensure scene safety, check responsiveness and breathing, call for emergency help, control severe bleeding and avoid unnecessary movement of a seriously injured person. First aid is temporary care and does not replace professional treatment.

  • Health information should be based on reliable medical advice. Self-medication and unsafe remedies should be avoided. Health concerns that are severe, persistent, contagious or worsening should be reported without delay to a parent, teacher, NCC officer or qualified healthcare professional.

  • NCC cadets should model discipline, cleanliness, physical fitness, first-aid awareness and responsible health behaviour during training and community activities.

What to Remember

Health and wellness are maintained through informed choices, personal hygiene, community cleanliness, balanced living, preventive care and timely assistance from qualified professionals. For examinations, retain the definitions of health, hygiene, wellness, communicable and non-communicable disease, immunity, first aid and mental health, together with the handwashing procedure, the equations Risk = Probability of harm × Severity of harm and BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)², and the named hygiene, nutrition, vaccination and first-aid practices.
