Who and What

  • Agriculture: The cultivation of crops and the rearing of animals for food, raw materials and other economic needs. It is a primary activity that provides food, raw materials, employment and income.
  • Primitive Subsistence Farming: Small-scale farming using simple tools and family labour, mainly to meet household needs.
  • Shifting Cultivation: A form of primitive subsistence farming in which forest is cleared and cultivated for a few years before farmers move to another plot.
  • Intensive Subsistence Farming: Farming on small holdings using large amounts of labour, irrigation, manure and multiple cropping to achieve high production.
  • Commercial Farming: Farming undertaken mainly for sale in markets, often using machinery, fertilisers, pesticides and improved seeds.
  • Plantation Agriculture: Large-scale commercial farming of a single crop, such as tea, coffee, rubber or sugarcane; processing is often located near the plantation.
  • Kharif Crops: Crops sown with the beginning of the monsoon, generally from June to July, and harvested from September to October. Examples include rice, maize, millets, cotton and groundnut.
  • Rabi Crops: Crops sown in winter, generally from October to December, and harvested from April to June. Examples include wheat, barley, gram, peas and mustard.
  • Zaid Crops: Short-duration crops grown between the rabi and kharif seasons, mainly from March to June. Examples include watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, vegetables and fodder crops.
  • Multiple Cropping: Growing more than one crop on the same piece of land during a year.
  • Rice: A major kharif food crop requiring high temperature, high humidity and about 100 cm or more rainfall, although irrigation permits cultivation in lower-rainfall regions. It grows particularly well in fertile alluvial and clayey soils. Major areas include the plains and deltas of the Ganga-Brahmaputra, Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri river systems, as well as parts of coastal and northeastern India.
  • Wheat: A major rabi crop requiring a cool growing season, about 50 to 75 cm of rainfall and bright sunshine during ripening. Major producing areas include Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan.
  • Millets: Nutritious coarse grains, including jowar, bajra and ragi, which can grow in less fertile soils and areas with low rainfall.
- Jowar: Mainly grown in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh. - Bajra: Grows well in dry and sandy regions, especially in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Haryana. - Ragi: Rich in calcium and mainly grown in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Pulses: Protein-rich crops such as gram, tur, urad, moong and masur. Most pulses improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation and require relatively little moisture.
  • Sugarcane: A tropical and subtropical cash crop requiring a hot and humid climate, about 75 to 100 cm rainfall or irrigation and a long growing period. Major producers include Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana.
  • Oilseeds: Crops producing edible or industrial oils, including groundnut, mustard, rapeseed, soybean, sunflower, sesame and castor.
- Groundnut: An important oilseed grown in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra. - Mustard and rapeseed: Mainly rabi oilseeds grown in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
  • Tea: A plantation beverage crop requiring warm, moist and frost-free conditions, frequent showers and well-drained fertile soil. It is mainly grown in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
  • Coffee: A plantation beverage crop grown mainly on shaded hill slopes in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Arabica and Robusta are important varieties.
  • Horticulture: The cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers and other garden crops.
  • Cotton: A commercial fibre crop requiring a frost-free period, high temperature, light rainfall or irrigation and approximately 6 to 8 months to mature. Black soil is particularly suitable for cotton.
  • Jute: Known as the golden fibre. It grows in warm, humid areas, especially West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Odisha and Meghalaya, and is favoured by fertile alluvial soil.
  • Spices: India is a major producer and exporter of spices, including pepper, cardamom, turmeric, ginger and chilli.
  • Green Revolution: Increased agricultural production through high-yielding variety seeds, irrigation, fertilisers, pesticides and improved farming methods.
  • Institutional and Technological Reforms: Government measures including land reforms, irrigation projects, crop insurance, credit facilities, minimum support prices and modern agricultural technology.
  • Minimum Support Price: A government-announced price intended to protect farmers from a sharp fall in market prices for selected crops.
  • Agricultural productivity:
Productivity = Total agricultural output divided by cultivated area.
  • Sustainable agriculture: Farming that combines production with soil conservation, water harvesting, balanced fertiliser use, organic manure, crop rotation, integrated pest management and protection of biodiversity.

Chronology

The material contains no specific dated historical events. It identifies seasonal periods rather than dated events: kharif crops are generally sown from June to July and harvested from September to October; rabi crops are sown from October to December and harvested from April to June; and zaid crops are grown mainly from March to June.

Causes and Consequences

  • Physical factors determine cropping patterns. Relief, soil, climate, rainfall, temperature, humidity and length of the growing season create different regional conditions. Consequently, crops are distributed unevenly: rice is concentrated in river plains, deltas, coastal areas and the northeast; wheat is important in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan; and millets are suited to drier and less fertile regions.

  • The monsoon strongly influences Indian agriculture. Dependence on seasonal rainfall affects crop production, particularly where irrigation is limited. Irrigation, improved seeds and modern technology reduce—but do not eliminate—the risks created by uncertain rainfall.

  • Different farming systems produce different economic outcomes. Primitive subsistence farming mainly supports the farmer’s household, whereas commercial and plantation farming produce crops for sale. Commercialisation can increase farm income and supply industries with raw materials, but excessive concentration on cash crops may weaken local food security.

  • Multiple cropping increases land productivity. Intensive subsistence farming uses labour, irrigation, manure and multiple cropping on small holdings. Growing more than one crop on the same land during a year can increase output, although it also requires adequate water, labour and inputs.

  • Crop characteristics shape regional specialisation. Rice requires high temperature, high humidity and substantial rainfall; wheat requires a cool growing season and bright sunshine at ripening; sugarcane requires a hot, humid climate and a long growing period; tea requires warm, wet, frost-free conditions and well-drained slopes; and cotton requires a frost-free period and is particularly suited to black soil.

  • Pulses contribute to soil fertility. Crops such as gram, tur, urad, moong and masur fix nitrogen and require relatively little moisture. Their cultivation can therefore support soil restoration and reduce pressure on soil nutrients.

  • The Green Revolution increased production through technological change. High-yielding variety seeds, irrigation, fertilisers, pesticides and improved farming methods raised agricultural output. However, modern inputs must be combined with conservation practices to protect soil fertility, groundwater and biodiversity.

  • Government intervention supports agricultural stability. Institutional and Technological Reforms—including irrigation projects, land reforms, crop insurance, credit, research, extension services and infrastructure—can improve farmers’ livelihoods. Minimum Support Price is intended to protect farmers from sharp falls in market prices for selected crops.

  • Agriculture faces structural and environmental challenges. Small and fragmented landholdings, monsoon dependence, soil degradation, water scarcity, low productivity, indebtedness and inadequate storage and marketing facilities can reduce farm incomes and increase vulnerability.

  • Food security depends on more than production. Adequate production must be combined with affordable access, proper storage and fair distribution of food grains. Sustainable farming is therefore necessary for both present food security and long-term rural development.
