Causes and Consequences
- Technological innovation increased the speed and scale of production. The flying shuttle, spinning jenny, water frame and power loom improved textile manufacture. Steam power operated machines, ships and locomotives, while coal supplied energy and iron provided material for machines, tools, railways and buildings.
- The factory system developed because production increasingly required the concentration of machinery, labour and supervision. However, industrialisation was gradual rather than sudden. Hand production remained important where machines were expensive, where goods required skilled finishing or where consumers demanded variety.
- Proto-industrial and factory production often existed together. Under the putting-out system, merchants supplied raw materials to rural households producing for distant markets. Traditional producers survived by specialising in fine goods, using family labour, accepting flexible work and combining agricultural and industrial occupations.
- Industrial capitalism created new economic classes and employment opportunities. Factory owners, merchants, managers and wage workers became increasingly important. Factories provided regular employment for some workers, while urbanisation encouraged migration from villages to towns for factory, transport, construction and service jobs.
- Industrial employment also produced insecurity and inequality. Many workers experienced long hours, low wages, unsafe conditions and frequent unemployment. Women and children were employed in many workplaces because employers could often pay them less than adult male workers. Piece-rate wages made income dependent on the quantity produced, while jobbers helped recruit workers and migrants.
- British industrial growth depended on expanding markets and consumer demand. Calico and chintz demonstrated the popularity of Indian cotton textiles in European markets. Advertisements helped sell mass-produced goods by associating them with modernity, status, trust and national identity.
- Colonial trade policies weakened Indian handicraft production. British policies encouraged the export of raw cotton from India and the import of British manufactured textiles into Indian markets. Indian weavers faced shortages of raw materials, rising raw-cotton prices, reduced demand, competition from machine-made cloth and pressure from company agents.
- Colonial rule altered India’s economic position. India increasingly became a supplier of raw materials and a market for British manufactured goods, contributing to the decline of many traditional industries.
- Indian industrial enterprise nevertheless expanded. The first cotton mill in Bombay was established in 1854, the first jute mill in Bengal in 1855, and the Tata Iron and Steel Company began production at Jamshedpur in 1912. Indian investment also developed cotton, jute, coal, iron and steel industries during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
- War conditions created new industrial opportunities in India. During the First World War, British factories were redirected towards war production, allowing Indian industries to supply more goods to local markets.
- Industrial development depended on more than technology. Capital, raw materials, labour, markets, transport and government policy all shaped industrial change. Industrialisation therefore developed unevenly across sectors and regions.
- The overall consequences were mixed. Industrialisation increased production, reduced costs in many sectors and created new business opportunities, but it also generated harsh working conditions, unstable employment, social inequality and unequal effects across workers, producers and regions.
