- Agro-based industry: An industry using agricultural products as raw materials, including the cotton textile, sugar, and jute industries.
- Mineral-based industry: An industry using minerals or metals as its main raw materials, including iron and steel and cement.
- Basic industry: An industry supplying raw materials or essential inputs to other industries. Iron and steel is a basic industry because steel supports engineering, construction, transport, machinery, and defence.
- Consumer industry: An industry producing goods used directly by people, such as clothing, processed food, and automobiles.
- Industrial location: The geographical place where an industry is established after considering resources, costs, transport, labour, markets, and other conditions.

- Cotton textile industry: An agro-based industry involving spinning, weaving, processing, and garment production using cotton fibre. Major centres include Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Coimbatore, Kanpur, and Kolkata. It is concentrated in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
- Jute industry: An agro-based industry producing sacks, ropes, mats, bags, and other goods from jute fibre. It is concentrated mainly along the banks of the Hooghly River in West Bengal.
- Sugar industry: An agro-based industry processing sugarcane into sugar, molasses, bagasse, and related products. Important producing states include Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat.
- Cement industry: A mineral-based industry using limestone, silica, alumina, and gypsum. It supports construction, transport, irrigation, and other infrastructure activities.
- Automobile industry: An industry producing trucks, buses, cars, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers. Important centres include Delhi-Gurugram, Mumbai-Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad-Halol, and Kolkata.

- Manufacturing processes raw materials into useful products; consequently, it increases their value, creates employment, earns foreign exchange, reduces dependence on imports, and promotes economic development.
- Industrial location depends on the combined effect of raw materials, power, water, labour, capital, transport, communication, markets, land, technology, and government support. Physical, economic, technological, social, and political factors therefore influence location rather than any single factor alone.
- Industries may be classified according to their source of raw material, ownership, size, weight of materials and products, and role in production. This classification distinguishes agro-based, mineral-based, basic, consumer, heavy, and other forms of industry.
- Iron and steel is a basic industry because steel provides inputs to many other industries and infrastructure projects. Its multiplier effect makes it important for engineering, construction, transport, machinery, and defence.
- The cotton textile industry provides substantial employment, but irregular power supply, outdated machinery, competition, and fluctuating raw-material prices limit its performance.
- The jute industry developed mainly along the Hooghly River in West Bengal because of nearby jute-growing areas, water availability, transport, labour, and port facilities.
- The sugar industry is located near sugarcane-growing areas because sugarcane is bulky and perishable and loses weight during processing. This explains the importance of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat.
- Cement production uses limestone, silica, alumina, and gypsum. The resulting industry supports construction, transport, irrigation, and other infrastructure activities.

Their concentration in Delhi-Gurugram, Mumbai-Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad-Halol, and Kolkata reflects the importance of markets, labour, transport, capital, technology, and supporting industries.
- Industrial air pollution results from smoke, dust, gases, and harmful particles released by factories and furnaces. It can cause respiratory diseases and damage vegetation and buildings.
- Water pollution results from untreated industrial effluents, chemicals, oils, dyes, and hot water discharged into rivers, lakes, and groundwater. Heated discharges also cause thermal pollution by reducing dissolved oxygen and harming aquatic life.
- Land pollution is caused by dumping solid waste, slag, chemicals, ash, and other industrial residues on land.
- Noise pollution is produced by machines, generators, compressors, transport vehicles, and construction activities.
- Pollution can be reduced by recycling and reusing water, treating wastewater, installing filters and scrubbers, using cleaner fuels, controlling emissions, managing solid waste, planting trees, and adopting energy-efficient technology.
- The 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—provide a practical environmental principle: reduce resource use and waste, reuse materials where possible, and recycle suitable waste into new products.
- Sustainable industrialisation requires a balance between economic growth, employment, resource conservation, public health, and environmental protection. Industrial growth should therefore be geographically balanced rather than concentrated only in a few large cities or regions.
