  • Resource: Anything with utility and economic value that can satisfy human needs, provided it is technologically accessible and culturally acceptable. Resources are not simply free gifts of nature; their usefulness depends on human knowledge, technology, skills, institutions, and responsible decision-making.
  • Biotic Resources: Resources obtained from the biosphere and possessing life, including plants, animals, and human beings.
  • Abiotic Resources: Non-living resources, including rocks, metals, soil, air, and water.

  • Stock: Materials that could satisfy human needs but cannot currently be used because suitable technology is unavailable.
  • Reserves: The part of stock that can be used with existing technology but is conserved for future requirements.
  • Resource Planning: The systematic identification, surveying, mapping, assessment, and planned development of resources. It also involves selecting suitable technology and institutions and matching resource development with national priorities.
  • Sustainable Development: Development that meets present needs while conserving resources and protecting the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
  • Land Use: The use of land for forests, agriculture, settlements, transport, industries, and grazing.
  • Land Degradation: A decline in the quality and productive capacity of land caused by natural processes or human activities.
  • Soil: The thin upper layer of the earth’s surface that supports plant growth. It forms through the interaction of climate, relief, organisms, parent rock, and time.
  • Soil Erosion: The removal of the fertile topsoil layer by running water, wind, or human activities.
  • Contour Ploughing: Ploughing along lines of equal elevation to slow water flow and reduce soil erosion on slopes.
  • Terrace Farming: Cutting steps or terraces into hill slopes to reduce the speed of runoff and prevent soil loss.
  • Strip Cropping: Growing crops in alternate strips, often with grass or other protective vegetation, to reduce wind erosion.
  • Shelter Belts: Rows of trees planted to reduce wind speed and protect soil, crops, and settlements from wind erosion.
  • Alluvial Soil: Soil widespread in the northern plains and river valleys. It is generally very fertile and is divided into newer khadar and older bhangar deposits.
  • Black Soil: Soil common in the Deccan Plateau. Its high clay content allows it to retain moisture, making it especially suitable for cotton cultivation.
  • Red and Yellow Soil: Soil formed on crystalline igneous rocks. Its red colour results from iron content, and it is commonly found in parts of the eastern and southern Deccan Plateau.
  • Laterite Soil: Soil formed under high temperatures and heavy rainfall through intense leaching. It can become productive with suitable manuring and irrigation.
  • Arid Soil: Generally sandy soil that may be saline and is usually low in humus and moisture. Irrigation can make it suitable for cultivation.
  • Forest or Mountain Soil: One of the major soil types in India, associated with forested and mountainous regions.

Causes and Consequences

  • Resources are classified in several ways because different characteristics affect their use and management. By origin, they are biotic or abiotic; by exhaustibility, renewable or non-renewable; by ownership, individual, community, national, or international; and by development status, potential, developed, stock, or reserves.

  • Resource planning is necessary because resources are limited and unevenly distributed. Some regions are resource-rich while others are deficient. In India, planning includes:
1. identifying and inventorying resources through surveys, mapping, and qualitative and quantitative estimation; 2. planning appropriate technology, skills, and institutional structures; and 3. matching resource development plans with overall national development plans.

  • Careless exploitation creates environmental and social problems. Uncontrolled resource use can cause poverty, pollution, land degradation, resource shortages, and social inequality. Economic development therefore needs to be balanced with social justice and environmental protection.

  • The Rio Earth Summit in 1992 increased international attention to sustainable development. The principle can be expressed as: sustainable use = present needs met + resources and environmental quality conserved for the future. This is a guiding principle rather than a numerical formula.

  • Land is a resource of fundamental importance because it supports natural vegetation, wildlife, human life, agriculture, settlements, economic activities, transport, and communication. Land-use categories generally include forests, land not available for cultivation, other uncultivated land, fallow land, and net sown area.

  • Land degradation results from both natural processes and human activity. Major causes include deforestation, overgrazing, mining, quarrying, over-irrigation, industrial waste, and improper agricultural practices.

  • Land degradation can be reduced through planned conservation. Relevant measures include afforestation, controlled grazing, management of wastelands, proper treatment and disposal of industrial waste, regulated mining, and planting shelter belts.

  • Soil supports agriculture but is vulnerable to erosion and declining fertility. Soil erosion removes the fertile topsoil through running water, wind, and human activities, threatening food security, ecological balance, and the long-term productivity of settlements and agriculture.

  • Different soil types have different characteristics and uses. Alluvial soil is generally fertile; black soil retains moisture and is suitable for cotton; red and yellow soil contains iron; laterite soil requires manuring and irrigation to become productive; and arid soil can become cultivable through irrigation.

  • Soil erosion can be controlled by reducing the force of water and wind and maintaining protective vegetation. Methods include contour ploughing, terrace farming, strip cropping, shelter belts, planting vegetation, and preventing uncontrolled grazing.

  • Sustainable development requires efficient use of resources, reduced waste, ecosystem protection, and consideration of future generations. Resource, land, and soil conservation therefore connect environmental protection with long-term human development.
