- Dehydration can reduce performance and impair temperature regulation. Signs of inadequate hydration may include thirst, dark urine, headache, dizziness, fatigue, reduced concentration, and declining performance. Electrolytes, including sodium, potassium, and chloride, help maintain fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle contraction.
- Before exercise, athletes should choose familiar, easily digested foods, generally rich in carbohydrates, moderate in protein, and low in excess fat and fibre. Large amounts of fried food, excess fat, and unfamiliar supplements should be avoided.
- During prolonged or intense exercise, fluid and, when necessary, carbohydrate intake help maintain energy and hydration. After exercise, combining carbohydrates with a protein source and replacing fluids supports glycogen restoration, muscle repair, and recovery.

BMI is a general screening measure rather than a complete assessment of athletic fitness. A sudden reduction in body mass may result from water and glycogen loss rather than actual fat loss and may harm performance.
