Primary activities directly extract or use natural resources, but their location, productivity, and sustainability result from the interaction of physical geography with human decisions, technology, markets, infrastructure, and government policy. Their development must therefore be assessed not only by output and profit, but also by resource conservation, environmental protection, and community welfare.

- Primary Activities: Economic activities involving the direct extraction or use of natural resources. They include agriculture, pastoralism, fishing, forestry, mining, and gathering, and provide raw materials for secondary industries.
- Agriculture: The cultivation of crops and rearing of animals to produce food, fibre, fuel, and other materials.
- Subsistence Agriculture: Farming mainly undertaken to meet the needs of the farmer and family, with limited surplus for sale.
- Commercial Agriculture: Farming conducted mainly to produce crops or livestock for domestic or international markets.
- Plantation Agriculture: Large-scale, capital-intensive commercial farming of a single cash crop, usually involving hired labour and processing facilities.
- Intensive Agriculture: A system using high inputs of labour, irrigation, fertilizers, and technology on relatively small holdings to obtain high yields.
- Extensive Agriculture: Farming over large areas with relatively low labour and capital input per unit of land.
- Mixed Farming: The combined cultivation of crops and rearing of livestock.
- Nomadic Herding: The movement of herders and livestock between locations in search of pasture and water.
- Commercial Livestock Rearing: Large-scale, specialised rearing of animals for meat, wool, hides, dairy goods, and related products.
- Dairy Farming: The specialised rearing of milch animals for milk and related products; it is commonly located near urban markets because milk is perishable.
- Fishing: The capture or harvesting of fish and other aquatic organisms from seas, rivers, lakes, and fish farms.
- Aquaculture: The controlled breeding, rearing, and harvesting of aquatic plants and animals.
- Forestry: The management, conservation, and use of forests for timber, fuelwood, paper pulp, medicinal plants, and other products.
- Mining: The extraction of minerals and ores from the Earth’s surface or subsurface. It may be open-cast when deposits are near the surface or underground when deposits occur at greater depth.
- Mineral: A naturally occurring inorganic substance with a definite chemical composition and physical properties.
- Gathering: The collection of naturally occurring products such as fruits, roots, leaves, gums, resins, and medicinal plants.

Causes and Consequences
- Physical geography establishes the resource base. Temperature, rainfall, length of the growing season, soil fertility, relief, slope, altitude, drainage, water supply, and the availability of minerals or pastures determine which primary activities are possible and productive.
- Agriculture reflects both environmental and human conditions. Land ownership, population density, labour, capital, technology, irrigation, transport, storage, market demand, and government policy influence whether agriculture is subsistence-oriented or commercial, intensive or extensive.
- Crop specialisation follows ecological requirements. Rice requires high temperature, abundant moisture, and usually level land or irrigation. Wheat generally requires a cool growing season, moderate rainfall, and a dry, sunny period for ripening. Millets can grow in relatively dry regions and less fertile soils, require less water, and are often more climate-resilient than water-intensive crops.
- Commercial orientation depends on accessibility and investment. Plantation agriculture is organised on large estates, usually involves one dominant cash crop, requires substantial capital, and depends closely on processing and transport facilities. Access to markets, storage, processing centres, finance, and transport encourages commercial production.
- Pastoral systems adapt to uneven resource distribution. Nomadic herding is common in deserts, semi-arid grasslands, and high mountain regions, where sparse vegetation, limited water, and harsh climates make permanent settlement or settled farming difficult. Commercial livestock rearing is associated with extensive grasslands, where large farms support cattle, sheep, or other animals using modern management methods.
- Perishability influences the location of production. Dairy farming is commonly located near urban markets because milk requires quick transport or refrigeration. This illustrates how technology and accessibility can reduce, but not entirely remove, environmental and logistical constraints.
- Aquatic resources and marine geography shape fishing. Fishing depends on the availability of fish, shallow continental shelves, ocean currents, nutrient-rich waters, suitable harbours, technology, and access to markets. Aquaculture expands production through the controlled breeding, rearing, and harvesting of aquatic organisms.
- Forestry depends on ecological conditions and management. Temperature, rainfall, soil, relief, and natural vegetation determine forest distribution. Sustainable forestry requires a balance between resource use, regeneration, and conservation.
- Geology determines mining locations. Mining is concentrated where minerals occur. Deposits near the surface may be worked by open-cast mining, while deeper deposits require underground mining. Technological development and mineral exploration can expand access to resources but cannot eliminate geological limits.
- Technology modifies environmental constraints. Irrigation, improved seeds, mechanisation, refrigeration, mineral exploration, and aquaculture can expand the limits of primary production. However, technology cannot remove all ecological limits or guarantee sustainable use.
- Primary activities have significant environmental consequences. Overgrazing, deforestation, soil erosion, water depletion, pollution, loss of biodiversity, and mining-related land degradation may result when extraction or production exceeds environmental limits and carrying capacity.
- Sustainable development requires regulated resource use. Conservation, regulated extraction, efficient technology, soil and water management, afforestation, crop diversification, and protection of local communities are necessary to reconcile production with long-term environmental welfare.
