  • Industrial location reflects cost reduction. Industries consider raw materials, power, water, labour, capital, transport, markets, land, technology, government policies, and historical conditions. The location decision can be expressed as:
total cost = material cost + labour cost + power cost + land cost + transport cost + other operating costs.

  • Raw-material characteristics influence location. Industries using bulky or weight-losing materials tend to locate near their sources. Weight-losing industries, such as some sugar and mineral-processing industries, therefore often show raw material orientation.

  • Market characteristics also influence location. Industries using perishable, fragile, bulky, or expensive-to-transport products tend to locate near consumers. Weight-gaining industries, including many food-processing and consumer-goods industries, often show market orientation.

  • Agglomeration encourages industrial concentration. When industries locate together, they can share services, skilled labour, suppliers, infrastructure, and markets. This contributes to the development of industrial regions such as the Mumbai-Pune region, the Ahmedabad-Vadodara region, the Bengaluru-Tamil Nadu region, the Hooghly region, and the Delhi-National Capital Region.

  • Industrialisation promotes wider economic development. Industrial development supports urbanisation, employment, infrastructure development, trade, national income, and economic linkages among agriculture, mining, transport, services, markets, and consumers.

  • Iron and steel has broad industrial significance. Iron and steel is a basic industry because it supplies materials and machinery to many other industries.

  • Different scales of industry have different developmental roles. Small-scale and cottage industries support rural employment, local skills, low capital investment, and balanced regional development. Large-scale industries provide high-volume production but require substantial capital, advanced technology, and large labour forces.

  • Modern technology affects industrial location. High-tech industries are attracted to places with research institutions, skilled workers, reliable communication, quality infrastructure, and investment.

  • Industrial concentration can create negative effects. Congestion, high land prices, traffic, regional inequality, and environmental degradation may result when industrial activity becomes heavily concentrated.

  • Industrial pollution creates environmental and health costs. Pollution may affect air, water, soil, and human health. Cleaner technology, recycling, waste treatment, energy efficiency, cleaner production, efficient resource use, pollution control, and sustainable planning can reduce these impacts.

  • Balanced industrial development requires diversification. Supporting small, medium, large-scale, and high-technology industries, while improving connections between production sectors and protecting the environment, can reduce regional inequalities and strengthen economic development.
