Causes and Consequences

  • Physical and human factors produce uneven population distribution. Relief, climate, soil, water availability, mineral resources and vegetation affect environmental suitability. Agriculture, industry, transport, urbanisation, political stability, historical settlement and employment opportunities further influence where people live.

  • Population concentrations occur where environmental and economic conditions are favourable. Major concentrations are found in East Asia, South Asia, Europe and parts of North America, especially near fertile plains, river valleys, industrial regions and coastal areas.

  • Population is sparse where environmental conditions or accessibility are restrictive. Deserts, polar regions, high mountains and dense equatorial forests generally support fewer people. Poor transport and limited economic opportunities can also produce sparse settlement.

  • Different density measures reveal different pressures. Arithmetic density gives a broad picture of population relative to total land area. Physiological density more directly indicates pressure on cultivable land, while agricultural density indicates the relationship between agricultural workers and cultivable land.

  • High population density does not necessarily indicate poor living conditions. Resource availability, technology, infrastructure and income affect whether a densely populated area can support a high quality of life.

  • Population growth has three components: births, deaths and migration. Natural increase measures the excess of births over deaths, while migration alters population size through immigration and emigration. Consequently, population growth is not determined by births alone; healthcare, education, employment and government policies also influence it.

  • The demographic transition links economic development to population change. In the first stage, birth and death rates are both high, so growth is low and fluctuating. In the second stage, death rates decline while birth rates remain high, producing rapid growth and potentially a population explosion. In the third stage, birth rates decline and death rates remain low, so growth slows. Some models include a fourth stage, in which both rates are low and the population is stable or may decline.

  • Global population growth accelerated over time. The world's population reached approximately 1 billion around 1800, 2 billion around 1930, 3 billion around 1960, 4 billion around 1974, 5 billion around 1987, 6 billion around 1999, 7 billion around 2011 and approximately 8 billion in 2022.

  • Population growth rates vary by level of development. Rates are generally higher in many developing regions and lower or negative in several developed countries. Economic development usually causes death rates to decline first and birth rates later, creating a period of rapid population growth during demographic transition.

  • Population composition helps explain social and economic conditions. Age, sex, literacy, occupation and income indicate the characteristics and potential needs of a population. A broad-based population pyramid indicates high birth rates and a young population, whereas a more rectangular or narrow-based pyramid indicates low birth rates and an ageing or stable population.

  • Population policies influence demographic outcomes. Pro-natalist policies may encourage larger families, while education, healthcare and family-planning programmes may promote smaller families.

  • Population size can create opportunities or pressures. A large population can be an asset when supported by education, skills, health and employment. However, rapid growth without adequate resources may increase pressure on food, housing, public services and the environment, particularly where population growth approaches or exceeds carrying capacity.

  • Sustainable population planning requires balance. Population needs must be considered alongside available resources, environmental limits and quality of life.
