- Climate change: Long-term changes in temperature, rainfall, wind patterns, and other climate conditions, mainly accelerated by human activities that increase greenhouse gas emissions.
- Global warming: The long-term rise in Earth's average surface temperature, largely due to increased concentrations of greenhouse gases.
- Ozone layer depletion: The thinning of stratospheric ozone, which reduces protection from harmful ultraviolet radiation; it was strongly linked to ozone-depleting chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons.
- Deforestation: The large-scale removal of forests for agriculture, construction, mining, roads, fuel, or other activities.

- Human beings depend on healthy ecosystems for air, water, food, soil fertility, climate regulation, medicines, and livelihoods. Environmental protection is therefore essential for human security and public health.
- The atmosphere is commonly divided into layers. The stratosphere contains the ozone layer, which absorbs much of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet-B radiation. Ozone layer depletion was strongly associated with chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone-depleting chemicals. The Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987, was established to control and phase out these substances. The 16 September is observed as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the adoption of the Montreal Protocol.
- Major greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapour, and industrial gases such as hydrofluorocarbons. Their increased concentration intensifies the greenhouse effect and contributes to global warming and climate change.
- Prevention is generally more effective and less expensive than repairing damage caused by pollution, habitat destruction, and resource depletion. The waste-management hierarchy therefore gives priority to prevention and reduction, followed by reuse, recycling, recovery, treatment, and safe disposal.
- The 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—conserve resources and reduce waste. Waste segregation at the source into biodegradable, recyclable, hazardous, and electronic waste supports appropriate treatment and disposal.
- Natural resources must be used sustainably so that economic development does not destroy ecological balance or deny resources to future generations. - Forests regulate climate, prevent soil erosion, recharge groundwater, provide habitat, and supply food, medicine, fuel, and livelihood resources. Afforestation establishes trees on land not recently covered by forest, while reforestation restores forests that have been removed or damaged. Environmental conservation also includes planting and protecting native trees and preventing forest fires.
- Water conservation methods include rainwater harvesting, watershed management, drip irrigation, leakage control, wastewater treatment, and preventing contamination of water bodies. Energy conservation includes using energy-efficient appliances, public transport, renewable energy, improved building design, and switching off unused electrical devices.
- The food chain shows the transfer of energy from producers to consumers, while decomposers return nutrients to the ecosystem. Energy flow through an ecosystem is one-way, whereas nutrients circulate through natural cycles such as the water, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles.
- The polluter pays principle states that those responsible for pollution should bear the costs of preventing, controlling, and remedying the environmental damage they cause. The precautionary principle supports preventive action where an activity may cause serious or irreversible environmental harm, even when complete scientific certainty is unavailable.
- Environmental impact assessment enables decision-makers to predict and evaluate the likely environmental effects of proposed projects before approval. Environmental decisions should consider ecological limits, social justice, public health, local knowledge, and the needs of future generations.
- Environmental responsibility is shared by governments, industries, educational institutions, communities, NCC cadets, and individual citizens. NCC cadets can contribute through disciplined personal habits, awareness campaigns, tree plantation, plastic-free activities, waste segregation, water conservation, disaster preparedness, and participation in local conservation programmes.
- Environmental awareness can be strengthened through education, NCC campaigns, cleanliness drives, tree plantation, water-harvesting activities, biodiversity surveys, rallies, and community service. Individual practices include avoiding single-use plastics, using public transport, conserving water and electricity, composting organic waste, and reporting illegal wildlife activities.
