Summary
Main Idea
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being rather than merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Maintaining health requires personal and community hygiene, balanced nutrition, physical activity, adequate rest, positive mental health, disease prevention and timely medical care. Clean environments and responsible citizenship further support the health and resilience of society.
Key Concepts and Definitions
- Health: A condition of physical, mental and social well-being that enables a person to live and function effectively.
- Hygiene: Practices that maintain cleanliness and prevent the spread of diseases.
- Personal Hygiene: Daily habits such as bathing, brushing teeth, washing hands, wearing clean clothes and keeping nails short.
- Community Hygiene: Collective measures such as safe water, sanitation, proper waste disposal, clean surroundings and disease-control programmes.
- Wellness: An active and continuing process of making healthy choices for physical, mental, emotional and social well-being.
- Balanced Diet: A diet containing appropriate amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water.
- Communicable Disease: A disease that can spread from one person to another, directly or through air, water, food, insects or contaminated objects.
- Non-Communicable Disease: A disease that generally does not spread between people and may result from genetics, lifestyle or environmental factors.
- Immunity: The body's ability to resist and fight infections through natural defence mechanisms and acquired protection.
- Vaccination: Administration of a vaccine to stimulate protection against a particular infectious disease.
- Mental Health: A state in which a person can manage emotions, cope with normal stresses, learn, work and maintain relationships.
- First Aid: Immediate and temporary care given to an injured or ill person until professional medical help is available.
- Sanitation: Safe management of human waste, wastewater, drinking water and cleanliness to protect public health.
- Health Awareness: Knowledge and understanding that help people make informed decisions about prevention, treatment and healthy living.
Supporting Arguments and Evidence
- The major dimensions of health are physical, mental, emotional and social well-being. In a broader understanding of wellness, spiritual well-being is also included. The World Health Organization Constitution defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
- Prevention is safer, less costly and more effective than treating avoidable illness after it occurs. Disease prevention includes immunisation, personal hygiene, balanced nutrition, physical activity, safe practices, environmental cleanliness and regular health check-ups.
- Personal hygiene reduces exposure to disease-causing organisms. Handwashing with soap should be carried out before preparing or eating food, after using the toilet, after coughing or sneezing, and after contact with dirt or animals. The four commonly taught steps are to wet the hands, apply soap and rub all surfaces thoroughly, rinse with clean water, and dry with a clean towel or air.
- Respiratory hygiene helps limit the spread of infection. It includes covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, disposing of tissues safely and staying home when seriously ill. Common routes of disease transmission include direct contact, droplets or air, contaminated food and water, blood and body fluids, and vectors such as mosquitoes.
- Community hygiene and sanitation are essential for public health. Safe drinking water and properly cooked food reduce the risk of water-borne and food-borne diseases. Proper sanitation requires the safe management of human waste, wastewater, drinking water and general cleanliness, while proper waste disposal and clean surroundings reduce environmental health risks.
- A healthy diet should provide adequate water, whole grains, pulses, fruits, vegetables, milk or suitable alternatives, while limiting excess salt, sugar and unhealthy fats. A balanced diet supplies appropriate amounts of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water.
- Regular physical activity improves cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, flexibility, body composition and mental well-being. A simple screening measure of body composition is calculated using the equation: BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, or BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]². BMI is a screening measure, not a complete diagnosis of health.
- Adequate sleep supports growth, memory, immunity, emotional balance and recovery. Adolescents commonly require approximately 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. Physical fitness and wellness therefore depend on regular activity, balanced food, sufficient rest, emotional regulation and avoidance of harmful substances.
- Substance misuse, tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption can damage physical health, mental health, relationships and social functioning. Mental health requires the ability to manage emotions, cope with normal stresses, learn, work and maintain relationships. It deserves the same care and respect as physical health, and seeking help is a responsible action rather than a weakness.
- Immunity enables the body to resist and fight infections through natural defence mechanisms and acquired protection. Vaccination stimulates protection against a particular infectious disease and is an important component of disease prevention.
- First-aid priorities are to ensure scene safety, check responsiveness and breathing, call for emergency assistance, control severe bleeding and avoid unnecessary movement of a seriously injured person. First aid is immediate and temporary care provided until professional medical help becomes available.
- Health is a shared responsibility. Individuals must practise healthy habits, while communities and institutions must provide safe water, sanitation, healthcare and health education. Personal health records, awareness of symptoms and timely consultation with qualified health professionals support early detection and treatment. Health information should be based on reliable evidence, and serious symptoms should be referred to qualified medical professionals.
- NCC cadets can promote wellness by setting a good personal example, maintaining clean surroundings, supporting health campaigns and spreading accurate awareness. Responsible citizenship therefore connects personal health practices with community well-being.
What to Remember
Health includes physical, mental, emotional and social well-being, and wellness also has a broader spiritual dimension. For examinations, retain the specific hygiene practices, handwashing steps, disease-transmission routes, balanced-diet requirements, sleep recommendation of 8–10 hours for adolescents, BMI equation, vaccination and first-aid priorities. Health protection depends on continuous prevention, responsible personal behaviour, reliable health information and cooperation between individuals, communities and institutions.
