The difference between them is magnetic variation, and the appropriate correction must be applied using the local information provided.
- Charts provide information for route planning. A chart should be interpreted using its title, scale, legend, symbols, grid references, compass direction and relevant hazards. A four-figure grid reference identifies a grid square, while a six-figure grid reference gives a more precise position. Grid references are read along the horizontal line first and then upward. Distance is commonly measured using the latitude scale because one minute of latitude represents approximately one nautical mile.

- Effective rowing depends on coordinated crew action. Common commands include “stand by”, “boat”, “shove off”, “forward”, “backwater”, “hold water”, “easy”, “stop rowing” and “boat your oars”. Commands must be understood before action. The coxswain steers, gives directions and controls the crew, while the stroke oar or leading rower sets the pace. A common rhythm improves control and propulsion.
- The rowing cycle involves four stages. The catch begins the stroke, the drive produces propulsion, the finish completes the power phase and the recovery prepares for the next stroke. Correct posture and coordinated movement reduce fatigue and improve propulsion. Oars should be carried carefully, placed securely and inspected for cracks or other damage before use.
- Ropes and knots serve specific practical purposes. A bowline creates a fixed loop, a reef knot joins two ropes of similar thickness, and a clove hitch temporarily secures a rope to a post or rail. Ropes should be kept dry when possible, coiled neatly and checked for fraying, cuts or weakening.
- Mooring and anchoring require controlled procedures. When anchoring, suitable holding ground should be selected, the anchor lowered steadily, sufficient rope or chain allowed and the boat checked to confirm that it is holding. During mooring, the boat should approach slowly, communication should be clear, fenders should be used where available and appropriate lines should secure the boat to a buoy, jetty or mooring post.
- Emergency response must be immediate but controlled. In a man-overboard situation, the alarm should be raised, one person should point continuously toward the person, a flotation aid should be thrown, and the boat should be stopped or turned as directed. No one should jump into the water without appropriate training and supervision.
- Environmental and situational awareness are essential. Weather, wind, current, visibility, water depth and traffic must be assessed before and during boating activity. Good seamanship includes responsibility for people, boats and the environment, including the prevention of pollution and damage to waterways.
- Maintenance and conduct support safe operation. Good seamanship requires discipline, obedience to commands, calm decision-making, teamwork, conservation of equipment and respect for water safety rules. Prevention through sound weather judgment, life-jacket use, equipment checks and knowledge of emergency procedures reduces the need for rescue.
