- Land Use: The way land is used for agriculture, forests, settlements, industries, transport, grazing and other purposes.
- Land-Use Pattern: The proportion of total geographical area devoted to different uses at a particular time. In India, it varies with relief, slope, altitude, soil, rainfall, temperature, drainage, water availability, population density, land tenure, technology, markets, transport, government policies and industrial development.
- Reporting Area: The area for which land-use statistics are officially collected and reported. Land-use data are usually based on the reporting area rather than covering the entire geographical area of India.
- Net Sown Area: The total area sown with crops at least once during an agricultural year.
- Gross Cropped Area: The total area under crops when areas sown more than once in a year are counted repeatedly.
- Cropping Intensity: The relationship between gross cropped area and net sown area, showing how intensively land is cultivated.
- Culturable Wasteland: Land that could potentially be cultivated but is unused or poorly used because of erosion, salinity, lack of water or other limitations.
- Fallow Land: Cultivable land left uncultivated to restore soil fertility or because of insufficient water and other constraints.
- Current Fallow: Land left uncultivated for one agricultural year or less.
- Other Than Current Fallow: Cultivable land left fallow for more than one year.
- Major Land-Use Categories: Land-use statistics commonly classify land into forests, land not available for cultivation, other uncultivated land excluding fallow land, fallow land and net sown area. Net sown area supports food and livelihoods, while forest area contributes to ecological balance.
- Common Property Resources: Resources shared by a community, including village pastures, grazing grounds, ponds and community forests.
- Land Degradation: A decline in the quality and productive capacity of land caused by erosion, deforestation, overgrazing, mining, salinity, waterlogging, industrial pollution or excessive chemical use.
- Soil Erosion: The removal of fertile topsoil by running water, wind or human activities.
- Soil Conservation: Measures that prevent soil loss and maintain fertility, including contour ploughing, terrace farming, strip cropping, shelter belts and afforestation.
- Agriculture: The cultivation of crops and rearing of animals for food, raw materials, employment and income.
- Subsistence Agriculture: Farming mainly intended to meet the food needs of the farmer’s family.
- Commercial Agriculture: Production of crops or animal products mainly for sale in markets.

- Plantation Agriculture: Large-scale commercial farming of a single crop, requiring capital, organised management, processing and transport facilities.
- Major Crops: India’s important crops include rice, wheat, millets, pulses, sugarcane, oilseeds, tea, coffee, cotton, jute and rubber.
- Rice: A water-demanding food crop grown mainly in high-temperature areas with adequate rainfall or irrigation, especially plains, deltas and coastal regions.
- Wheat: A major rabi crop requiring cool conditions during growth and warm, dry conditions during ripening.
- Millets: Hardy and nutritious cereals, including jowar, bajra and ragi, which grow in relatively dry areas and poor soils.
- Pulses: Protein-rich crops such as gram, tur, urad and moong. They generally require less water and improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
- Cash Crops: Crops grown mainly for sale and industrial processing, including cotton, sugarcane, jute, tea, coffee, rubber and oilseeds.
- Kharif Crops: Crops sown with the southwest monsoon and harvested mainly in autumn, including rice, maize, cotton, jute, groundnut and soybean.
- Rabi Crops: Crops sown in winter and harvested in spring, including wheat, barley, gram, peas, mustard and linseed.
- Zaid Crops: Short-duration crops grown between the rabi and kharif seasons, including watermelon, cucumber, vegetables and fodder.
- Green Revolution: The adoption of high-yielding variety seeds, irrigation, chemical fertilisers, pesticides, farm machinery and improved practices that sharply increased production, especially from the late 1960s.
- Horticulture: The cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices and plantation crops.
- Diversification of Agriculture: Movement from dependence on a few food crops towards a combination of crops, livestock, fisheries, horticulture and other activities.
- Institutional and Technological Reforms: Measures including land reforms, consolidation of holdings, irrigation development, improved seeds, rural credit, crop insurance, extension services and market support.
- Sustainable Agriculture: Agriculture that maintains productivity while conserving soil, water, biodiversity and the long-term productive capacity of land.
- National Forest Policy, 1952: Recommended that about one-third of India’s geographical area should be under forest cover, with a higher proportion in hilly and mountainous regions.
- Agricultural Seasons: India has three principal cropping seasons: kharif, rabi and zaid.
- Rice Distribution: Rice is associated with monsoon and irrigated regions such as the eastern plains, coastal plains, river valleys and deltaic areas.
- Wheat Distribution: Wheat is concentrated mainly in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
- Millet Distribution: Jowar is important in parts of the Deccan Plateau and central India; bajra is widely grown in dry areas; ragi is important in Karnataka and adjoining regions.
- Pulse Distribution: Pulses are grown across India. Gram is commonly associated with the rabi season, while tur is commonly grown in warmer regions.
- Sugarcane: Requires a long frost-free growing season and is grown in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat.
- Cotton: Grows best in warm conditions on well-drained black soils and is important in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.
- Jute: Requires a warm, humid climate and fertile alluvial soils; it is concentrated mainly in West Bengal and parts of Assam, Bihar, Odisha and Meghalaya.
- Tea: Grows in warm, humid areas with well-drained acidic soils and slopes, especially in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
- Coffee: Mainly cultivated on shaded hill slopes in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
- Food Security: Depends on adequate production, access to food, affordability, nutrition and stability of supply.
Causes and Consequences
- Finite land resources and rising demand: India’s land is limited, while population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation, transport development and agricultural expansion increase competition for land. This makes planned land-use management necessary.
- Physical diversity and regional land-use patterns: Differences in relief, slope, altitude, soil, rainfall, temperature, drainage and water availability produce varied land-use and cropping patterns across India.
- Human decision-making and agricultural change: Population density, land tenure, technology, markets, transport, government policies and industrial development influence land use alongside physical conditions. Agriculture is therefore shaped by both environmental and human factors.
- Expansion of cultivation and intensive use: The distinction between net sown area and gross cropped area shows that land may be cultivated more than once in a year. The cropping intensity formula—(Gross Cropped Area ÷ Net Sown Area) × 100—measures this intensity. Higher values generally result from irrigation, improved seeds, fertilisers, technology and favourable climate.
- Cropping seasons and climatic conditions: Kharif crops depend largely on the southwest monsoon and include rice, maize, cotton, jute, groundnut and soybean. Rabi crops are sown in winter and include wheat, barley, gram, peas, mustard and linseed. Zaid crops, including watermelon, cucumber, vegetables and fodder, are grown between the rabi and kharif seasons.
- Regional crop specialisation: Rice is concentrated in eastern plains, coastal plains, river valleys and deltaic areas because it requires high temperature and substantial water. Wheat is concentrated in north-western and northern India because it requires cool growing conditions followed by a warm, dry ripening period.
- Suitability of millets and pulses: Jowar, bajra and ragi can grow in relatively dry areas and poor soils. Pulses such as gram, tur, urad and moong require less water and improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Their cultivation can therefore support food security and soil management.
- Commercial agriculture and industry: Sugarcane, cotton, jute, tea, coffee, rubber and oilseeds are important cash crops. Their production supplies raw materials to industries, supports employment and contributes to export earnings.
- Agriculture’s wider economic role: Agriculture contributes to food supply, employment, industrial raw materials, export earnings and rural development. It is therefore central to both economic activity and social welfare.
- Green Revolution and increased production: From the late 1960s, high-yielding variety seeds, irrigation, chemical fertilisers, pesticides, farm machinery and improved practices sharply increased crop production, especially wheat and rice.
- Costs of the Green Revolution: In some regions, intensive agricultural production contributed to groundwater depletion, soil nutrient imbalance, chemical pollution and regional inequalities. Increased production therefore did not eliminate the need for environmental and social assessment.
- Structural limitations: Small and fragmented landholdings reduce the efficiency of mechanisation and make investment difficult for many farmers. Limited access to institutional credit further restricts the adoption of improved technology.
- Monsoon dependence and unequal irrigation: Indian agriculture remains strongly influenced by the monsoon, although irrigation has reduced this dependence in several regions. Unequal irrigation contributes to regional differences in productivity.
- Agricultural challenges: Soil erosion, waterlogging, salinity, declining groundwater, unequal irrigation, low productivity, inadequate storage, price instability and limited access to institutional credit threaten agricultural stability and farmer incomes.
- Land degradation and conservation: Afforestation, regulated grazing, watershed management, contour bunding, check dams, reclamation of saline soils, controlled mining and efficient irrigation can reduce land degradation and protect productive capacity.
- Organic and conservation-based farming: Organic farming reduces dependence on synthetic chemical inputs through composting, green manuring, biological pest control and crop rotation. Crop rotation, mixed cropping and intercropping can improve soil fertility, reduce pest risks and stabilise farm income.
- Diversification and rural incomes: Horticulture, livestock, fisheries, agroforestry and value-added activities can raise rural incomes and reduce dependence on a few crops.
- Need for inclusive reform: Sustainable agricultural development requires land security, affordable credit, technology, markets, storage and insurance for small and marginal farmers, alongside irrigation development, improved seeds, extension services and market support.
- Long-term sustainability: Sustainable agricultural development must balance productivity, farmer income, social equity and environmental conservation so that present needs are met without reducing the productivity of future generations.
