  • Land Degradation: The decline in the quality and productive capacity of land. It may result from erosion, salinity, waterlogging, deforestation, mining, quarrying, overgrazing, excessive irrigation, and improper disposal of industrial waste.
  • Soil Erosion: The removal of the fertile top layer of soil by running water, wind, or human activities.
  • Deforestation: The clearing or large-scale removal of forests for agriculture, settlements, transport, mining, or industry.
  • Water Scarcity: A condition in which available water is insufficient in quantity or quality to meet the requirements of people, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems.

  • Urbanisation: The growth in the proportion of the population living in urban areas and the physical expansion of towns and cities.

Causes and Consequences

  • Population growth, urbanisation, industrialisation, and unsustainable development increase pressure on land, water, energy, and waste-disposal systems. However, population pressure alone does not explain environmental problems; technology, consumption patterns, governance, and resource-management practices are also significant.

  • Air pollution results from vehicles, industries, thermal power plants, construction activities, burning of fuel, and crop residue. Particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and smoke can produce harmful changes in atmospheric quality.

  • Water pollution follows when untreated domestic sewage, industrial effluents, fertilisers, pesticides, oil, plastics, and religious or cultural waste enter surface water or groundwater. Water conservation therefore requires rainwater harvesting, watershed development, reuse of treated water, efficient irrigation, prevention of leakage, and protection of wetlands.

  • Deforestation, overgrazing, mining, quarrying, excessive irrigation, waterlogging, salinity, and improper disposal of industrial waste contribute to land degradation. Soil erosion removes fertile topsoil through running water, wind, and human activities.

  • Contour ploughing, terrace farming, strip cropping, afforestation, shelter belts, controlled grazing, and check dams help control soil erosion and land degradation. These measures support the principle that resources should be used according to their carrying capacity.

  • Urbanisation and rural-urban migration increase demand for housing, employment, transport, water, sanitation, and waste-management facilities. Slums often develop because the growth of affordable housing and basic services is slower than the growth of the urban population.

  • Urban waste disposal requires collection, treatment, recycling, and safe disposal. Waste segregation should distinguish biodegradable from non-biodegradable material; composting converts biodegradable waste into manure, while recycling allows paper, glass, metals, and some plastics to be reused.

  • Environmental impacts are distributed unequally. Poorer communities often experience greater exposure to pollution and resource depletion while possessing fewer resources to respond. Consequently, sustainable development must include social justice and equity between present and future generations.

  • Pollution prevention is generally more effective and less costly than treating pollution after it has occurred. Pollution control therefore includes preventive measures as well as the treatment and safe management of pollutants.

  • Urban planning can reduce unhealthy settlements when it provides affordable housing, transport, sanitation, clean water, waste-management facilities, and employment opportunities.

  • Community participation strengthens conservation. Conservation is more likely to succeed when local communities participate in decision-making and receive fair benefits from resource management.

  • Geographical analysis operates at multiple scales. A local action may produce regional or global effects, while the same problem may require different solutions in different places. Analysis should therefore examine location, causes, spatial distribution, regional differences, human effects, and possible solutions.

  • Environmental Impact Assessment supports informed planning by identifying and evaluating the likely environmental effects of a proposed project before implementation.
