- Transport Network: A system of connected routes, terminals and facilities through which movement takes place.
- Node: A point in a transport or communication network where routes begin, end or intersect, such as a port, airport or railway station. Ports are especially important nodes because they connect inland production areas with international sea routes.
- Mode of Transport: The means used for movement, including roadways, railways, waterways, airways and pipelines.
- Road Transport: A flexible mode suitable for short and medium distances, especially door-to-door movement and connections between rural areas and markets.
- Rail Transport: A land-based mode suited to carrying large numbers of passengers and heavy or bulky goods over long distances.
- Water Transport: A relatively inexpensive mode for heavy and bulky goods, using inland waterways and ocean routes. It depends on navigable rivers, canals, ports and suitable coastal conditions.

- Pipeline Transport: A specialised mode used mainly for liquids and gases, including crude oil, petroleum products, natural gas and water. Pipelines can operate continuously and reduce handling losses, but construction is expensive and routes are relatively fixed.
- Mass Communication: Communication reaching large numbers of people through newspapers, radio, television and the internet.
- Digital Communication: The rapid exchange of information through electronic networks, mobile phones, computers and the internet.
- International Trade: The exchange of goods and services between different countries.
- Domestic Trade: The exchange of goods and services within the boundaries of a country.
- Imports: Goods and services purchased from another country.
- Exports: Goods and services sold to another country.
- Balance of Trade: The difference between the value of a country’s exports and imports of goods.
- Favourable Balance of Trade: A situation in which the value of exports is greater than the value of imports.
- Unfavourable Balance of Trade: A situation in which the value of imports is greater than the value of exports.
- Trade Route: A path or network used for moving traded goods and services between places.
- Trade Liberalisation: The reduction of restrictions such as tariffs, quotas and licensing requirements on international trade.
- International Trade Organisation: The World Trade Organization, established in 1995, which provides a framework of rules governing international trade.
Causes and Consequences
- Physical and economic conditions influence transport networks. Relief, climate, rivers and coastlines affect the development and efficiency of routes. Population density, industrial development, accessible terrain, production, trade, income, technology and urbanisation also affect network density. Consequently, transport networks tend to be denser where population, industry and markets are strongly developed.
- Different transport modes are selected for different purposes. No single mode is suitable for every journey. Roadways provide flexibility and door-to-door service; railways are efficient for heavy loads and long-distance land transport; waterways are economical for bulky goods; airways provide the quickest long-distance movement; and pipelines transport liquids and gases continuously. Selection depends on distance, cost, speed, the nature of goods and terrain.
- Transport supports economic and social activity. By connecting production areas with markets and consumers, transport supports agriculture, industry, tourism, education, healthcare, disaster management, governance and national integration. Efficient transport therefore increases accessibility and economic opportunities.
- Communication complements transport. Postal services, telecommunication systems, mobile networks, satellites, radio, television and the internet allow information to move without the physical movement of people or goods. Modern communication reduces the importance of physical distance and enables rapid coordination, decision-making and electronic transactions.
- Trade develops from spatial differences between places. Countries differ in natural resources, climate, technology, labour skills, capital and production costs. Since no region is completely self-sufficient, these differences create exchange between regions and countries. A country’s main exports and imports reflect its resource base, level of industrialisation, technology and consumer demand.
- The balance of trade indicates the relationship between exports and imports. Using the equation Balance of Trade = Value of exports of goods − Value of imports of goods, exports exceeding imports produce a favourable balance of trade, while imports exceeding exports produce an unfavourable balance of trade.
- Trade routes and nodes influence the scale and direction of international exchange. The Suez Canal links the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea and shortens the sea route between Europe and the Indian Ocean region. The Panama Canal links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and reduces the need to travel around the southern tip of South America. Ports connect inland production areas with international sea routes.
- Political and commercial conditions affect international trade. Trade agreements, tariffs, quotas, political relations and global demand influence the volume and direction of trade. Trade liberalisation can increase international exchange by reducing restrictions such as tariffs, quotas and licensing requirements. The World Trade Organization, established in 1995, provides a framework for international trade rules.
- Trade can produce both benefits and risks. International trade can generate income, employment and foreign exchange. However, excessive dependence on imports or reliance on a limited range of exports can create economic vulnerability.
- Transport and communication can promote uneven development. Well-developed networks encourage regional development by improving access to markets, services and information. Unequal access, however, can increase differences between regions.
- Sustainable planning is necessary because transport and communication have environmental costs. Planning should reduce congestion, pollution, energy use and environmental damage while improving accessibility.
